This monolithic holy water stoup — carved from a single block of limestone — carries the quiet authority of medieval France. Its broad, concave fluting gives the exterior a characteristic star-like form, the result of a craftsman working entirely by hand in the Romanesque tradition. At 15.8 cm tall, it is compact yet commanding: dense, tactile, and unmistakably old.

The Romanesque style, which flourished between the 11th and 13th centuries, is defined by its solemnity and structural honesty. No ornament for ornament's sake — only form serving purpose. Stoups like this one were placed at church entrances or set into chapel walls, offering holy water to those who passed. This example has no foot, as was typical: it would have rested on a stone ledge or been fitted into a niche.

This piece comes from the distinguished collection of Bricard, lending it both provenance and pedigree. It was catalogued at auction as: Bénitier monolithe en pierre calcaire à décor de larges cannelures concaves, style roman, sans pied — Hauteur : 15,8 cm.

Place it on a shelf, a windowsill, or an entrance table. Fill it with water, with soil, with a single stem. Objects like this don't need a purpose to justify their presence — they simply belong.
