This oil painting depicts a standing figure in traditional North African dress, a rifle resting across his shoulder with effortless confidence. Rendered with the luminous precision that defined Théophile Lybaert's Orientalist work, the white robes catch the harsh midday light against a sun-bleached wall — a scene painted with the quiet authority of someone who had truly observed his subject.

Lybaert (Ghent, 1848–1927) trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent under the Belgian history painter Théodore-Joseph Canneel. He began his career painting genre and Orientalist scenes before turning, in his later years, to the religious and historical works for which he became most widely known — earning him the description "a modern Memling" from his contemporaries. His work is represented in Belgian collections and remains sought after by collectors of 19th-century European art.
